Top 5 Yearly Maintenance Procedures for your eGSE

We understand that because your eGSE contains little moving parts and sealed battery modules, maintenance is very little. However, there are 5 things you need to add to your maintenance checklist that are largely focused on inspection, electrical integrity, and mechanical wear on components.

Annual maintenance ensures that your eGSE continues to deliver while maintaining safe ramp operation. Yearly inspections supplement daily and quarterly checks by verifying system integrity, electrical connections, safety components, and mechanical elements that may degrade over time.

Cable and Connector Inspection

Power connectors and cables are high-wear components and must be inspected annually.  If you have damaged connectors it can result in unreliable power delivery, electrical hazards, and numerous hours of downtime.

Maintenance tasks include:

  • Inspect connector housing for cracks, damage, or wear and update as needed
  • Check pins and contacts for corrosion or overheating then clean or replace
  • Verify cable insulation integrity

Cooling and Ventilation System Check

Cooling fans and airflow channels ensure proper temperature regulation of power electronics. When not working properly, overheating can lower performance and overall efficiency along with accelerating aging of components and can create sudden shutdowns.

Annual tasks:

  • Verify that all cooling fans operate correctly and there are no delays or obstructions
  • Inspect air vents and clear any blockages or debris
  • Clean internal cooling pathways where necessary

Battery Monitoring System Review

The battery packs used in your eGSE are sealed and maintenance-free. Although the battery packs themselves are not serviced internally, monitoring ensures early detection of degradation. Here are some best practices you should implement throughout the year.

Continual review tasks:

  • Avoid use of fast charging to avoid battery degradation
  • Review battery temperature and performance history
  • Minimize exposure to extremely high temperatures when parked
  • Maintain an optimal battery charge level between 20% and 80%

Mechanical and Structural Inspection

The eGSE chassis, wheels, trailer, and other structural components must be checked for integrity and safe operation. Inspection of wear and tear, necessary lubrication, and alignments, ensure safe movement on the ramp or in the hanger.

Maintenance tasks include:

  • Inspect tow-bar mechanism and locking systems
  • Check wheel assemblies and bearings
  • Grease turntable or steering components where applicable
  • Inspect braking system, pads, and locking mechanisms

Safety Systems Verification

Each year billions of dollars are lost by ramp damage typically caused by collisions between ground support equipment and parked aircraft. Ramp safety is a major concern for the industry and devices must be tested to ensure proper operation in this busy environment.

Inspection items:

  • Remove any debris from warning beacons and lights to guarantee clear projection
  • Test audible alarms or sirens ensure there are no delays or malfunctions
  • Clean reflectors and visibility tape markings

In conclusion, by focusing on connector integrity, electrical systems, battery monitoring, mechanical components, and safety features, operators can maximize equipment lifespan while maintaining efficient ramp operations.

With these high traffic environments, failure is not an option and it can cause flight delays, aircraft damage, or safety incidents.  Annual maintenance helps identify wear, electrical issues, and structural faults before they disrupt operations.
