MISCONCEPTIONS OF EGPU’S

People around the world are accepting the need to reduce carbon emissions by transitioning to cleaner fuels. As a result, governments are updating decarbonization policies and setting new policies in place. In response, airports worldwide are looking to reduce emissions.

The battery powered ground power unit is a way of contributing to an ongoing quest for lowering the environmental impact of airports. There is always a barrier to entry for a new technology, this also applies to battery powered GSE, some of which are based on misconceptions or lack of familiarity.

Four top misconceptions of eGPUs we addressed

1. I have nowhere to charge my eGPU

Infrastructure can be an obstacle when transitioning to battery equipment. However, today there are many solutions to charge your eGPU. For example, power sharing capabilities at the gate or charging from other mobile equipment. The ITW GSE 7400 can be charged via standard 60-150A outlets and the PowerShare and upcoming DC charger can connect to any 2400 series and share power dynamically, avoiding the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades.

2. The cost for a new eGPU is too expensive

In fact, more likely than not, keeping your aging diesel units will be significantly more expensive than switching to a battery powered ITW GSE 7400. The initial investment cost associated with battery powered equipment is almost always significantly higher than diesel powered alternatives, but when it comes to operating expenditure, like fuel and maintenance, electric wins every time. Investing in an eGPU, is an investment in the future.

3. The battery won’t last long

Actually, the ITW GSE 7400 90kVA will last for 8 to 10 turn-arounds with a narrow-body aircraft before it needs recharging. The 28VDC JetEx will last you for days on end and the 180kVA 7400 will last 5-6 hours powering a B777 or an A350. Until then, it provides precise and clean output voltage at the aircraft plug.

4. An eGPU doesn’t provide enough power

It doesn’t matter if you need a 28VDC, 90kVA, or 180 kVA eGPU, the units are immediately ready to deliver 400 Hz power when you hit the start button. No pre-heating or waiting for the engine to power up, you just plug it in, push the button and enjoy the quiet operating environment.
