Giving Battery Packaging a Second Life

At ITW GSE, reducing environmental impact is not only about the products we deliver. It is also about how we handle the materials that support them along the way.

In 2025, we partnered with the Danish Technological Institute as part of the Zero Waste Project to explore how packaging materials from our operations could be reused rather than discarded.

Each battery for our electric Ground Power Units (eGPUs) is delivered in a sturdy wooden transport box. Instead of treating these boxes as waste after delivery, the wood has been given a new purpose through collaboration with the local city corps.

From transport boxes to new local value

Parts of the wood (suitable for outdoor use) have been transformed into insect hotels, providing habitats for bees, beetles, and other beneficial insects that support local biodiversity.

Not all wood types are appropriate for insect housing. The remaining material has therefore been reused as subfloor insulation, creating a practical layer between heating pipes and flooring in local facilities.

Small steps that make a difference

By finding new applications for packaging materials, the project helps reduce waste, extend the life of resources, and create value in the local community.

Initiatives like the Zero Waste Project support our broader ambition to operate more responsibly and to continuously improve how we use materials across our value chain.
