Powering Progress at Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is advancing its net-zero ambitions by installing a new gate power solution featuring 8 x ITW GSE 2400 Power Coils and 4 x Power Share units.

With a growing fleet of electric ground support equipment (eGSE) and the construction of a new terminal, the airport aimed to phase out diesel equipment and implement a cleaner, more ergonomic system that supports operational efficiency without requiring extensive infrastructure changes.

A Smarter Approach to Gate Power

Before this installation, LBA relied on diesel ground power, but with a newly constructed terminal and a growing fleet of electric ground support equipment (eGSE), the airport needed a future-ready solution that could meet evolving sustainability targets without compromising operational efficiency.

The challenge: Limited space at the head of stand and a need to support both fixed electrical ground power (FEGP) and EV charging.

The solution: ITW GSE’s compact Power Share combined with the 2400 Power Coil. By efficiently managing available grid power, Power Share ensures aircraft operations always take priority while any surplus power is seamlessly distributed to connected eGSE like belt loaders, tugs, etc.

The Power Share unit integrates seamlessly with our existing ITW GSE 400 Hz Ground Power Units, automatically prioritizing aircraft power while intelligently distributing any surplus capacity to other connected equipment,” Andrew Snowdon, Head of Engineering, LBA.

It has proven highly reliable and serves as the primary charging point for the Jet2 Mototok, providing consistent and dependable charging while maintaining GPU availability for aircraft turnaround.”

Sustainable, Scalable and Easy to Install

One of the major advantages of Power Share is its ease of integration. For Leeds Bradford Airport, the transition to smarter ground power required minimal disruption.

Installation was straightforward and required minimal disruption – Power Share integrated cleanly onto our existing GPU infrastructure, exactly as ITW GSE described. The automatic load management works flawlessly.” Andrew Snowdon, Head of Engineering, LBA.

This project supports LBA’s long-term objective of achieving net zero by 2030. With plans to expand the new gate setup across all stands and implement DC chargers in the future, the Power Share solution offers a scalable, cost-effective path forward.

Results from Day One

Since going live, the system has delivered on all fronts:

  • Reliable, automated load management
  • Better use of available grid power
  • Reduced reliance on diesel
  • Smarter, emission-free GSE charging

Power Share has delivered exactly what we needed: smarter use of gate power, improved charging capability for our eGSE, and reduced strain on our electrical infrastructure. It’s been a real asset in supporting more efficient and sustainable ground operations at LBA.” Andrew Snowdon, Head of Engineering, LBA.
