Why Cleaning your PCA matters

How the ITW GSE 3500 PCA Optimizes Performance, Comfort, and Sustainability.

Cleaner PCA, Higher Performance

In today’s aviation environment, sustainability is not just a buzzword – it’s a strategic intent. As airports and airlines push toward electrification and carbon neutrality, ground support equipment must perform smarter, cleaner, and more efficiently than ever.

The ITW GSE 3500 PCA (Pre-Conditioned Air unit) is engineered to support this evolution. But like any high-efficiency system, it requires proper maintenance – including regular cleaning – to ensure optimal performance. Here’s why keeping your PCA clean isn’t optional, and how the ITW GSE 3500 PCA leads the charge in sustainable airside innovation.

What Makes the ITW GSE 3500 PCA Stand Out

The 3500 PCA is more than a traditional air conditioning unit for aircraft – it is a system built for today’s electrified apron.

One of its most innovative features is Automated Aircraft Type Detection. By integrating with systems like VDGS or BMS, the 3500 PCA identifies the exact aircraft type at the gate and adjusts its airflow accordingly. Instead of using a one-size-fits-all setting based on aircraft category, it delivers precision cooling tailored to the actual aircraft. This not only improves passenger comfort but also enhances cooling efficiency by more than 50%.

Intelligent Power Management (IPM) takes gate optimization a step further. IPM enables the 3500 PCA to continuously monitor the power needs of all connected equipment – such as GPUs – and dynamically adjusts its own energy consumption. This ensures total gate power stays within limits without compromising cabin comfort. It also reduces infrastructure costs by eliminating the need for oversizing electrical systems.

Add to that a modular design that allows the internal plenum and heat exchangers to be cleaned in under 2.5 hours, and you get a PCA that’s as easy to maintain as it is efficient to operate.

Why Cleaning is Important

A clean PCA unit:

  • Ensures maximum cooling efficiency by preventing dust and debris buildup on filters and coils
  • Maintains optimal air quality inside the aircraft cabin and ensures passenger comfort
  • Supports longer equipment lifespan by reducing strain on internal components
  • Minimizes energy use, supporting your airport’s sustainability goals

Dirty components can lead to reduced airflow, increased wear and tear, and costly downtime. The ITW GSE 3500’s modular design makes routine maintenance and filter replacement fast and straightforward.

Proven Impact in Real-World Operations

The 3500 PCA is already redefining gate operations with dual manufacturing in Florida and Denmark to meet global demand. With successful integrations worldwide, the system supports faster turnarounds, reduced operational noise, and a smaller carbon footprint – all while ensuring passengers’ onboard comfort.

“ITW GSE’s vision to be the cleanest, most reliable and most cost-effective supplier in the market is not just something we say, it’s based on real aircraft demand. With our IPM solution, we focus on a total gate solution rather than on individual products. The gate solution offers numerous advantages for our customers—from easier installation, optimized efficiency, precise airflow, and the option to recharge other equipment at the gate as well. At the end, our customers benefit from a lower total cost of ownership and get a sustainable solution. That’s our value proposition.”

David Feuga, Regional Sales Director, Middle East & Africa.

Sustainability in Action

Aligned with ITW’s corporate sustainability strategy, the 3500 PCA supports our goal of a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030. It reduces:

  • Carbon emissions by replacing traditional APU usage
  • Energy consumption through smart airflow regulation
  • Noise levels, benefiting both ramp personnel and passengers

Ready to Optimize your Gate?

Whether you’re planning new terminal infrastructure or upgrading existing stands, keeping your PCA units clean and efficient is a crucial step toward sustainable operations.

The ITW GSE 3500 PCA is engineered to make that easy.
